Liverpool vs Borussia Dortmund a few quick thoughts

  • It may be a massive cliche but it really was one of those “Magical European Nights At Anfield” last night.
  • An absolutely sensational comeback by Jurgen Klopp’s side when they game looked over within the first 10 minutes
  • That’s because Dortmund were quick out of the blocks and undid all of Liverpool’s hard work in the first leg with two quickfire strikes in front of The Kop
  • The first came after just 5 minutes when Dortmund broke quickly after picking up a misplaced Philippe Coutinho pass. It was 5 on 5 and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang bought a stunning save from Simon Mignolet but he could only parry it straight at the feet of Henrikh Mkhitaryan who coolly slotted home to put the away side in front
  • If that was a bad start it got even worse when Aubameyang rifled into the top corner to make it 2-0 after 9 minutes and now Liverpool had to score 3 times as it stood to have any chance of progressing to the Semi Finals
  • Had Klopp got his tactics wrong from the outset – it seemed as if Liverpool’s gung ho approach was unnecessary what with them having an away goal to protect and now Liverpool had an incredible uphill challenge ahead of them
  • The aim for Liverpool was to make sure they didn’t concede anymore before the break
  • Thankfully they did but it was going to need a hell of a turnaround in the second half, dare I say spirit of Istanbul proportions
  • The fightback was on just 3 minutes after the break when Divock Origi again got the better of Roman Weidenfeller and slotted through his legs to give Liverpool some hope but at that point that’s all it was…hope
  • And it’s always the hope that kills you isn’t it as when Marco Reus scored just 10 minutes later to make it 3-1 on the night even the most ardent Liverpool fan would have felt it was game over
  • Liverpool were then back to having to score 3 goals again but now they only had half an hour in which to do so
  • Philippe Coutinho scored half way through the second half to give Liverpool the smallest glimmer of hope
  • But when Mamadou Sakho scored with a header with a quarter hour left you felt they couldn’t could they?
  • The Anfield roar was in full effect now
  • And at this point you felt if anyone was going to nick a goal it was going to be Liverpool
  • Remember at this point Dortmund didn’t have to score they just had to withstand wave after wave of Liverpool pressure
  • But Liverpool were snatching at opportunities in a bid to get a late winner much to the frustration of Jurgen Klopp and fans alike
  • Then they were presented with one last opportunity. Marcel Schmelzer gave away a free kick near the halfway line in which he picked up a freekick
  • Liverpool took it quickly and Daniel Sturridge found himself in the channel with the ball, his neat skill found James Milner who gave a lung busting run to get into the box
  • He teed up an inch perfect cross for Dejan Lovren to pick the perfect time to score his first ever goal for the club and send Anfield into delirium
  • An absolutely astonishing comeback
  • Heartbreak for Dortmund and Thomas Tuchel, but they only have themselves to blame for throwing away such a comfortable advantage
  • Now Liverpool progress to the Semi Finals and will be clear favourites to win the competition
  • They will definitely be putting all their eggs into this basket now, so don’t expect much from their league games as the carrot of Champions League Football is just 3 games away
  • They will now await the Semi Final draw later Today but they will strongly fancy their chances whoever they are paired with
