Liverpool Look To Become Salah Dodgers

Liverpool have began their summer shopping plans in earnest but apart form the capture of England Under 20 hero Dominic Solanke they have had little success as yet. In addition to upsetting Southampton over the perceived tapping up of defender Virgil Van Dijk they have also been rebuffed in their hopes of capturing Mohamed Salah.

The Anfield outfit are believed to have made a £28m bid to Italian side Roma in a bid to sign the Egyptian international Salah but that was turned down by the Serie A runners-up as they are looking for a price between nearer that of £40m.

With that in mind it might be deemed to much for Jurgen Klopp to spend on the former Chelsea midfielder and he may well now be ready to avert his eyes elsewhere and it is Portugal in which Klopp is now focusing his attention in regards to a new signing.

That is because he believes that Gelson Martins of Sporting Lisbon could also be a suitable target and more importantly would command a lower fee than the one that is being asked from the team that was recently managed by Luciano Spalletti.

The 22 year old may well be saddled by a £50m release clause fee but it is believed that Liverpool can work round that by virture of Sporting’s financial pressures. With Sporting not qualifying automatically for the Champions League group stage, Liverpool feel there is an angle in which to force the price down.

With them offering £28m for Salah then the expectation will be to try and complete a deal for Martins for no more than £30m. Sporting will obviously want to keep hold of their star player but in this instance it seems as if the need to cash in will be more prominent.

In terms of the wide attacking player brief that Liverpool manager Klopp is looking to fill then Martins certainly will fit that remit, the stand out performer of a slightly disappointing season he chipped in with 6 goals from 31 Primera Liga appearances as Sporting finished 12 points behind cross city rivals Benfica.
