Hungary vs Iceland – Match Preview

Group F of Euro 2016 has already been turned upside down after the opening group games on Tuesday. Hungary with the biggest upset so far after beating neighbours Austria while Iceland managed to tame the beast that was Cristiano Ronaldo and earn a share of the points

Hungary now find themselves one win away from qualifying for the Round of 16 a feat that not many people outside or for that matter even in Hungary would have thought plausible at the start of the tournament

That said a win for Iceland and they would almost reach the knockout phase themselves so this game is keenly poised. The smallest nation in the tournament were even to everything that Portugal threw at them on Tuesday night, so much so that they raised the ire of Cristiano Ronaldo after the game

He accused Iceland of having a small time mentality but I think that’s just an obvious case of sour grapes from the Real Madrid star as now Iceland have reached the big time and for many neutral’s second time they will want to add to their first ever major tournament point with a first ever major tournament win

As for Hungary they had the evergreen Gabor Kiraly and Zoltan Gera showing all their experience on Monday as they beat Austria 2-0. These two players have a combined age of 77 but you would not have noticed it after their energetic performance on Tuesday evening

After that win they will certainly fancy their chances of winning a second game in a row and securing a spot in the Round of 16. This may not be the game that everyone would have been craving when the draw was made but it could be one of the most interesting ones so far

Both teams have nothing to lose but because of that you hope that they don’t go for a safety first approach and then cancel each other out. I reckon Iceland will edge it but no-one gave Hungary a chance against Austria did they. I guess in summary I’m saying I have no idea, best just to watch it and see it how it ends.
