Huddersfield vs Southampton – Premier League Match Preview

If you are a Huddersfield fan then it is fair to say that your start to the season has exceeded even your wildest dreams and expectations. Today the Terriers will be looking to continue that dream as they play host to Southampton.

It has been two wins from two for David Wagner’s men as they sit in the very heady heights of second in the Premier League table, obviously you cannot read to much into the ladder at this point but it does make for incredibly good reading right now.

Two wins have come from encounters with Crystal Palace and Newcastle, while scoring four goals to boot. Not only that though they have managed to keep two clean sheets at the other end. With those statistics in mind, confidence will undoubtedly be high going into today’s game with Southampton.

It may well be a case of making hay while the sun shines as Huddersfield will undoubtedly be in a period of matches where the fixture computer will not be too kind to them. Those days may well be around the corner but it is not something they will worry about in the immediate future.

The two teams going head to head this afternoon had contrasting outcomes in the Carabao Cup 2nd Round in midweek. Huddersfield edged past Rotherham while Southampton were the round’s biggest casualty as they were dumped out by EFL Championship outfit Wolves.

That result would have been welcomed by Mauricio Pellegrino especially so early into his managerial reign and after the club reached the final of the competition last season there would undoubtedly have been disappointment that another cup run has been curtailed so soon.

The defeat in midweek would have taken the gloss off of a dramatic win last Saturday when they managed to snatch all three points at home to West Ham. Charlie Austin was the hero of the hour as his injury time penalty sent Joe Hart the wrong way and meant The Hammers would be leaving Hampshire empty handed.

A result that was perhaps harsh on Slaven Bilic’s men as they had come back from 2-0 down to snatch what would have been an unlikely point. Unlikely because they had to play a large majority of the game with 10 men after Marko Arnautovic’s sending off.

But it is Southampton who have now recorded four points from a possible six this season. Both those games however have been played at St Mary’s so a first away trip of the campaign will be an acid test as to how Maurcio Pellegrino’s men can cope with life on the road.

As for the outcome this afternoon, Huddersfield’s tails will be up and rightfully so. Southampton will look to bounce back after their Carabao Cup exit but I have a feeling that Huddersfield will not be woken up from this dream start anytime soon. I reckon it will be a home win as David Wagner’s men continue their maximum points haul.
