Guest Article – Serie A Review Week 33

Another guest article now and Filippo Festuccia returns with an extensive review of all the action in Week 33 of Serie A. You can follow Filippo on Twitter here @FilippoFest. Over to you Filippo

It always feels wrong to call a result before it’s absolutely, mathematically certain, but this is it: Juventus has won another Serie A title, turning their season around after a terrible start and gaining a steady advantage over their competition. They’re now sitting at a comfortable nine points lead over Napoli, with five games to go. Juventus trounced a desperate Palermo on Sunday, while Napoli lost the biggest of big matches on Saturday against Inter.

Luckily for Napoli, their competition for second place (and a guaranteed spot in next year’s Champions League group stage) is scarce and clueless. Roma suffered their usual fate, a crippling incapacity to convert draws into wins. Their game against Atalanta was very reminiscing of the classic Spalletti side from his first run managing Roma ten years ago: clear advantage against a weaker team leading to soft legs and a lack of concentration. With two consecutive draws, Roma would have to defeat Napoli in their upcoming match and hope their rivals lose some more points on the road. Not impossible (Napoli are a fickle bunch and they often struggle for a few games after a big loss) but very, very hard – and let’s face it, Napoli probably deserves it more at this point.

Should Roma lose against Napoli, then it would be an all-out duel with Inter, who sits a mere four points behind the giallorossi. Mancini’s team looked very impressive dealing with Napoli – thanks to a world-class performance by Icardi – and are now eyeing either the Europa League group stage or, with some luck and tenacity, the Champions League playoff spot occupied by Roma. Meanwhile, Fiorentina keeps pace, with only two points less than Inter after a very convincing performance against Sassuolo, and they might surprise Inter in the end, pushing them down to 5th. Which would be irrelevant, if it wasn’t for the fact that AC Milan is in the Coppa Italia final: with a victory, Milan would advance directly to the Europa League group stage, and one between Inter and Fiorentina would slip to the August playoff round.

Looking at the lower part of the table, Palermo and Verona seem to have lost all hope (even though Palermo is only three points from the safe zone), which allows Carpi and Frosinone to gain some distance. Carpi is 17th – temporarily safe, but with only one point on Frosinone. Udinese is 16th and sits four points above Carpi, so safe unless something cataclysmic happens. It will then be a duel between these two teams, who played in Serie A for the first time this season: one of them will have to try again, while the other will have to improve to stay alive next year as well.

Thanks Filippo, make sure to keep an eye out for his review for Week 34 next week and also subsequent articles between now and the end of the season.
