Guest Article – 10 Facts About The 2018 World Cup

Time for another guest article now and it also time for another debut – Mark got in touch with me last week as he had some content regarding the FIFA World Cup that he wanted to share. Mark is a foosball player and a football lover who has a blog about foosball called Foosball Zone. If you are interested in learning about foosball history, tricks or you are more interested in foosball tables reviews, check out his blog on the linked text.

So Mark now has provided us with 10 facts about the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Mark it’s over to you

The World Cup 2018 will be held in Russia and this is the first time for Russia to host Football World Cup. Actually, this is the first World Cup since Germany 2006 which is hosted in Europe and it is the first Wolrd Cup ever held in Eastern Europe.

The mascot of the World Cup in Russia is called Zabivaka and it is a wolf dressed as a football player. The owner of this mascot is actually a Russian student who won the public poll with the design.

The theme of the World Cup is: “The dream and the cosmic outer space exploration, enlivened with folk motives featuring Firebirds, Matryoshkas and folk patterns.” It is consistent with cosmonautic revelation of the logo by the International Space Station in October 2014.

The World Cup is played between 32 teams; 14 from Europe (including Russia), 5 from Africa, 4 from Asia and South America (each), 3 from North America and 2 spots filled during the playoffs.

Teams will be divided into 11 different cities around Russia: Sochi, Kaliningrad, Volgograd, Saransk, Rostov-on-Don, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara, Kazan, Yekaterinburg, Saint Petersburg and Moscow. Every city is in the European section of Russia.

Yekaterinburg is one of the cities teams will be divided and it is 1790 km far from Moscow. It is the furthest of all 11 cities.

The first and the last match of the World Cup will be played at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.

The World Cup in Russia was supposed to be the first time Zimbabwe has every played on the tournament, but FIFA expelled them from the Qualifications. The reason for expelling Zimbabwe was the fact that the Zimbabwe Football Assiciation failed to pay a severance fee for a choach within wanted period.

Russia expects more than 2 000 000 tourists to come only during the World Cup. Foreigners who will help organise the Cup will be able to enter the country without visa, but with other valid documents. That means not only the official participants but fans and volunteers as well. Other people will need a visa for entering Russia.

Every stadium in those 11 cities has to meet special Green Building Standards made by FIFA, which means that each of those cities will build new or reconstruct old stadiums. Each of those stadiums already has developed plans for long-term use which means that Russia has changed their sport and recreational structure in those cities.
