Giving The Cup The Respect It Deserves

The F.A. Cup has returned and once again the discussion as to it’s standing in the modern day game has come to the fore. For the Premier League clubs it can be only be deemed something of a nuisance as it is a competition that gets in the way of the main task in hand.

For the top six clubs that task is usually winning it – although Manchester City have ruined that dream for the other quintet of clubs this time around, for the other fourteen clubs in the top flight it is just a case of making sure they beat the drop and with that in mind this cup competition goes on the back burner.

You only have to look at the lineups of Bournemouth and Leicester yesterday, wholesale changes nearly saw them punished and both Eddie Howe and Claude Puel have the one thing they did not want going into yesterday, that of course being the additional fixture that a replay will now serve up.

Both managers will point to a large squad of players who all need games and also a busy festive period as their reasoning to making so many changes yesterday and in fairness there is an element of truth in that but there is no doubting that like many other managers this is bottom of priorities.

However it must be infuriating for Leicester fans that they aren’t having a proper crack at this especially as the threat of relegation this season is now all but non existent after the appointment of former Southampton boss Claude Puel earlier in the season
