Germany vs Poland a few quick thoughts

  • We witnessed the first stalemate of the competition so far last night and given the two teams playing it’s fair to say that it comes as somewhat of a surprise
  • With Robert Lewandowski looking to go up against many of his Bayern Munich teammates it was set for an enthralling encounter but one that unfortunately didn’t really live up to the hype
  • Lewandowski’s is still looking for his first goal of the tournament and many people who would have backed him before the competition for the Golden Boot will now be very close to tearing up their betting slips
  • That’s because this draw and Northern Ireland’s earlier win against Ukraine has blown this group wide open
  • Although a draw for both Germany and Poland in the final group game will secure qualification and wrap up 1st and 2nd in the group respectively
  • In a game of very few chances, the fact highlighted by the fact that there wasn’t even a shot on target in the first half it was Poland who had the better of them
  • Arkadiusz Milik had by far the best chance of the night seconds after restart, his header ended up going wide from four yards when he seemed certain to score.
  • That was once again a let off for Germany who again showed vulnerability at the back
  • But credit must go to them as they aren’t conceding goals so if that is a weakness then it’s not having too much of an effect on them
  • Their best chance fell to Mesut Ozil but he saw his effort well saved by Lukasz Fabianski. The Swansea was selected after injury to Wojciech Szczesny
  • All in all it was a frustrating night for both sides, Poland will probably feel the happier with a point but had Milik taking his golden opportunity then it would have been a very different story
  • At least Joachim Low kept his hands out of his pants though, that is something we can all be grateful for
