Germany Name Confederations Cup Squad

We may not be fortunate enough to be blessed with a major tournament this Summer but thankfully there is still an element of international football to keep us busy in the close season. That is because next month the Confederations Cup comes to Russia in what is viewed as a warm up for the World Cup in 2018.

Germany are one of the eight teams in the tournament by virtue of being the World Cup holders after their success over Argentina back in 2014. That night saw Mario Gotze score the winning goal after extra time but Gotze does not feature due to a long term absence.

And manager Joachim Low has taken the opportunity to blood new players during this tournament with no fewer than 7 uncapped players being named in his Confederations Cup squad. With the world cup only 12 months away and few dates available to experiment then it is the perfect opportunity in which to try some new faces.

The uncapped players chosen are playmaker Kerem Demirbay and striker Sandro Wagner (both Hoffenheim), winger Amin Younes (Ajax), midfielder Diego Demme (RB Leipzig), goalkeeper Kevin Trapp (Paris St-Germain), defender Marvin Plattenhardt (Hertha Berlin) and striker Lars Stindl (Borussia Monchengladbach).

While Premier League interest is in the form of Shkodran Mustafi, Emre Can and Leroy Sane. Germany have been drawn against Chile, Cameroon and hosts Russia and will arguably go into the tournament as favourites although with the changes in personnel there is something of the element of the unknown.

Here is the squad in full
