Every January Tottenham Transfer Rumour Debunked

We are nearly at that time of the year, no not Christmas but the start of the January transfer window. Already clubs across the country and beyond are getting themselves into something of a frenzy as the anticipation of bringing in some new faces looms large.

As we all know by now when a transfer window opens there is a multitude of rumours to go alongside as multiple media sources do their very best to bring you the latest news as to who may well be coming to your club and whose arrival is a non starter.

It does not matter where a club is in terms of league position not to mention the actual division they find themselves in, they will be undoubtedly linked with a player or two as managers decide whether or not to dip into the upcoming January sales.

Tottenham are no different to any other club in the land right now and you could argue that after a stuttering first half of the season their need to sign some additional names is more urgent than that of the teams that are now competing for fourth place in the Premier League with.

Earlier this week the media outlet Football.London gave a breakdown of all of Tottenham’s potential transfer targets and the likelihood of them making their way to Wembley at the turn of the year, you can find the original article by clicking this linked text

Now the guys at Football.London seem to have their glass half full in terms of transfer dealings while without being a pessimist I have my glass half empty, of the names that are mentioned in the article I am going to stick my neck on the block and say that we get none of these new signings, now I will give you a blow by blow account as to why

Gareth Bale

We may as well start the list with a big name and mark this one in the category ‘wishful thinking’. Tottenham may well have first shout on any bid for the Welsh Galactico but quite simply there is no way that Real Madrid would be prepared to sell the forward in January and also there is no way Daniel Levy would sanction a bid at the same point in the season.

Not only that but if and when Real Madrid do listen to any bids you get the feeling that should Tottenham throw their hat into the ring, it would only be matched or beaten by Manchester United with all previous signs pointing to a move to Old Trafford rather than a return to North London.

Tottenham fans may well feel that Bale is the missing link in a team that needs a truly world class player but there is also a question mark about the former Southampton youngsters long term fitness, the adage ‘never go back’ in Football could also be one that rings very true in this case.

Ross Barkley

The Everton midfielder had endeared himself to Tottenham fans after deciding against a move to Chelsea in the Summer with many feeling that is a case of when and not if the England international makes the move from Merseyside to London.

That may well still be the case but the question that needs to be asked is whether or not Daniel Levy is prepared to grease the wheels next month in order to facilitate a move in January than opposed to in the close season some six or seven months from now.

The fact that Barkley is available on a free transfer will no doubt appeal more to Levy and with Everton still demanding to high an amount for his services to be used elsewhere you get the feeling that Tottenham will eventually get their man but are not in a position to hand over any cold hard cash.

Wilfried Zaha

£35m seems to be the price quoted for the Ivorian winger and in this day and age you would have to say that would be very good value indeed should Tottenham be able to land the Crystal Palace player. But the only problem is the South London club will have a huge reluctance to sell.

It is not unfair to say that Zaha is their talisman right now and any departure of the player who had a fleeting stint at Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson would seriously hamper their chances of staying up in the Premier League this season especially as they are currently in the midst of a resurgence, something that Zaha has played a huge part in.

Should the worst happen from a Crystal Palace point of view and they do get relegated come next May then a move across London does become a very attractive proposition. Not only that but the South London outfit will then have to cash in on their biggest asset. Tottenham will be watching the relegation battle with some interest but Palace will not be considering any offers this early.

Andre Gomes

You get the feeling that his name was bandied about as something of a smoke screen in the Summer in a bid to try and hurry along the Ross Barkley move, as it stands neither Barkley or Gomes made the move to Wembley and I cannot see Tottenham going back in for the Barcelona midfielder this coming January either.

Surplus to requirements at Barcelona you would have to ask yourself bar being an additional squad member just what enhancement he would give to the current Tottenham squad. There are certainly other fires that Mauricio Pochettino needs to attend to and for that reason I don’t think the phone at the Nou Camp will be ringing anytime soon.

Ryan Sessegnon

If we come to the acceptance that Danny Rose is going to be leaving Tottenham then another left back is going to be needed to fill that void. Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon has been a player who has been admired by Spurs for a quite a while and you would think that they will eventually table a bid for the left back.

But as of right now there seems to be a left back log jam with potentially three left backs into one not fitting, if Sessegnon was to move to Tottenham then it would require the departure of Danny Rose to Manchester United first and that is something that I cannot see happening until the Summer

Therefore there is definitely potential for some chopping and changing in the left back department but it will take an out before Tottenham get an in

Luke Shaw

Almost the same reasons as above, unless there is a January swap deal for Danny Rose. Logistically that could happen but swap deals are very rare in this day and age. People may make the obvious connection that Shaw and Pochettino have from their time in Southampton but the smarter money would be on snaring Sessegnon from Fulham.

Luka Modric

If you thought the link for Gareth Bale was romantic then this one is pure lust. The fact that he is 32 would be a big red flag in the eyes of Daniel Levy and as we know there is simply no room for sentiment when he is involved with the purse strings. Tottenham fans may well say that they need an older head around the squad, unfortunately Modric is not the one.

Mateo Kovacic

Tottenham did not actually make an official bid in the Summer although Real Madrid said there was definitely an interest, will that interest be rekindled next month? Again you have to wonder if he is the kind of player that the club needs right now as they are well stocked in the centre of midfield.

Not only that but the Croatian would be cup tied for the Champions League tie against Juventus so you would have to wonder just how much necessity there is for the midfielder. I don’t think the ‘special relationship’ between the two clubs will be getting exercised anytime soon.

Riyad Mahrez

The Algerian is definitely in the shop window at the King Power stadium but there are a lack of customers for the player who was influential in Leicester’s fairy tale Premier League success back in the 2015/16 season, Mahrez had ideas of playing for Barcelona but you get the feeling those ideas are above his station somewhat.

If Tottenham were to try and sign a player from Leicester they would arguably be more attracted by Demarai Gray and a few months ago that could have been a viable option but with the new Leicester boss Claude Puel taking a shine to the youngster it now looks like that avenue has become a dead end.

Dani Ceballos

Only moved to Real Madrid last summer off the back of an impressive European Under 21 Championships performances, you can use the same reason as Kovacic but just swap Croatian for Spanish. A perfect example of Los Blancos buying young talent and not knowing what to do with it.

Richarlison

Although Watford are going through something of a rut right now there is no doubting the performances of their Brazilian midfielder Richarlison this season, the youngster has taken to the Premier League like a duck to water and Marco Silva will not be entertaining any bids for him in January. Tottenham will monitor the situation come next Summer and see if it is worth testing the water.

Ademola Lookman

Moved from Charlton last season and the obvious link would be that Tottenham would offer him a return to the capital, but with Sam Allardyce now in charge of the Toffees there is every chance the youngster will be given an opportunity to show what he can do. This one does not even get out of the starting blocks.

Leon Goretzka

Tracked by just about every team with Champions League aspirations next season, with that in mind you would wonder if Tottenham would even be first in the queue not only that but it once again is a player in an already congested centre midfield department

Jann-Fiete Arp

Labelled as the German Harry Kane. That is some billing and something to live up to especially when just 17 years old. Will Hamburg be willing to rid themselves of such a precocious talent I doubt it right at this moment but if Arp does get anywhere near that billing then in the future they may not have a chance

Manuel Lanzini

West Ham selling a player to Tottenham – not happening in the most bluntest of terms

So that is my debunking of all the Tottenham transfer gossip, sorry to be a pessimist but that is my take – I’d love to hear yours please leave your thoughts in the comments below.
