Everton vs Watford a few quick thoughts

  • The build up to this game was overshadowed by Ross Barkley and his contract dispute with Everton
  • Therefore it was almost written in the stars that the England international was going to dominate proceedings at Goodison Park last night
  • Everton boss Ronald Koeman has told Barkley to sign a new contract by next Thursday
  • If not he will be sold in the Summer
  • But Barkley can arguably add another £10k to his weekly wage demands after scoring the games only goal last night
  • With Everton secured 7th place and more importantly European football next season there was not a great deal to play for from their point of view
  • The same could be said for Watford what with Premier League survival secured
  • But that said current boss Walter Mazzari must really be feeling the pressure right now as question marks continue to be asked in regards to his employment status
  • That is now a fourth straight defeat for Watford and should Crystal Palace win tomorrow they will slip to 16th in the table
  • This slide down the table is mirroring last season and that ultimately did for Quique Sanchez Flores as he was shown the exit door by the Pozzo family who own the club
  • With life imitating art at Vicarage Road it looks like we could be seeing the same situation 12 months later
  • Things do not get easier as Watford make the short journey to Chelsea on Monday
  • The only saving grace will be the fact that Chelsea have won the league and perhaps Antonio Conte will do his compatriot a favour at Stamford Bridge
  • Although in my opinion even a win there will only be prolonging the agony, I would be very surprised if Mazzari is still in charge by the time the 20171/18 season comes around
  • Last night the game was decided in the second half by Ross Barkley, he was given too much time and space by Sebastian Prodl and duly obliged by curling an effort from 20 yards past Huerelho Gomes
  • Watford looked toothless in attack and rarely threatend the Everton backline
  • It was once again a poor performance on the road from The Hornets as they really have lost their sting at the end of this season
  • The question now for Everton is who blinks first in regards to the contract talks, to be fair Barkley could not have timed his goal any better
  • But at the same time it just shows how hot and cold the player can be
  • Manager Koeman obviously wants players who are committed to the Everton cause and if Barkley is not prepared to put pen to paper then he obviously feels he is disposable
  • As for Romelu Lukaku that is no goal in the last four matches but he is still three clear in the race for this season’s Golden Boot
  • You would imagine even with this small goal drought he will be able to get over the line
  • For Everton this season has been an undoubted success, the next challenge is to try and break into the top six
  • They are going to have their work cut out but there are exciting times around the corner in the blue half of Merseyside
