Everton vs Tottenham – Premier League Match Preview

Before the international break Merseyside was pitted against North London and the outcome was not a good one for the representative’s of the capital city as Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool ran out 4-0 winners against an incredibly hapless Arsenal side.

Therefore Tottenham will be hoping that their is not a similar kind of result this afternoon as they make the trip to Goodison Park to face Everton. They make the journey having picked up four points from a possible nine after failure to win any of their first two home games of the season.

Hosts Everton have also picked up the same amount of points and you would have to say that the fixture computer has not been all that kind to them as they have been paired up with Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham in successive matches.

Just under a fortnight ago they faced off against the defending Premier League champions and were easily brushed aside as Antonio Conte’s men ran out 2-0 winners. That was their second successive game away from home and they picked up just one point on their travels.

In addition to that they have only scored twice this season and the only person to get on the scoresheet for Everton so far is Wayne Rooney. The former England international may well be a former motorist after he was arrested for Drink Driving just over a week ago.

An average of 0.66 goals per game in the Premier League for Everton should not cause Tottenham all that much of a problem especially not the defence has been reinforced with late captures in the transfer window. Davinson Sanchez who made a very brief cameo against Burnley is now joined by Serge Aurier who joined from PSG.

He is not the only late addition to the squad as Fernando Llorente also signed on transfer deadline day to give Tottenham another option in attack as his aerial prowess could very well be utilised off the bench should they need to nick a goal.

One player who could have been in Tottenham colours were it not for a lack of fitness was Ross Barkley, the England international was at one point all set for a move to Chelsea only to decide not to sign with the club, whether that means he prefers to link with Mauricio Pochettino is something we will not find out until at least January.

For Tottenham it is fair to say that the points earned do not match the level of performances and if they had perhaps better game management at Wembley then they early season outcome could have looked a lot different. You could say that they have been masters of their downfall.

Minutes away from at least earning a draw against Chelsea when they were in the ascendancy only for Marcos Alonso to score his second of the game and then just minutes away from a first league win at Wembley only for Chris Wood to score on his Burnley debut and earn a share of the points.

Arguably no greater example of the fine margins that make all the difference at this level and twice Tottenham have been caught out by relative sucker punches. Today is going to have to require another professional performance on the road similar to their opening weekend win against Newcastle.

If there is to be winner today then it will not make particularly good reading for the loser. Four points from twelve will be a disappointing start for either club. Tottenham as they look to continue the momentum from the past two seasons while Everton will look to kick on after a busy summer of transfer spending.

Therefore this fixture is almost a must not lose than opposed to a must win. I have a feeling that the two sides will cancel each other out especially as the last two matches at Goodison Park have ended in a 1-1 draw, do not be surprised if the same happens again today.
