Everton vs Manchester City – Match Preview

Everton goalkeeper Joel Robles will replace first choice Tim Howard for Wednesday’s League Cup semi-final first leg against Manchester City.

Captain Phil Jagielka (knee) and midfielder Steven Pienaar (hamstring) are unlikely to be risked.

Sergio Aguero is set to start for Manchester City but fellow striker Wilfried Bony is injured.

Aguero has struggled with injuries this season but boss Manuel Pellegrini said he will not be rested.

Editor’s Note: Everton probably have their best chance of winning a trophy this season in the form of the Capital One Cup but tonight they face the sizeable hurdle of Manchester City as they bid to secure a trip to Wembley next month.

Roberto Martinez’s men currently find themselves in 11th place in the League so will be looking to put their patchy league form aside and aim to have one foot in the final. On Sunday they drew against Tottenham in an end to end match but they’ve only delivered one win in 7 league matches and the murmurs of discontent are getting louder at Goodison Park. A win tonight would go some way to quieting the noise and ease the pressure on Martinez.

As for Manchester City they showed their title winning credentials by claiming two late goals away at Watford on Saturday to secure their first away win in the league since September. Sergio Aguero bagged the winner and looks set to start tonight as he looks to build on his match fitness.

Manuel Pellegrini needs to deliver some silverware this season and a second League Cup win in 3 years would go some way to appeasing the City owners but with Pep Guardiola waiting in the wings that surely wouldn’t be enough to keep him in a job for the start of next season.

City will go into the game favourites but Everton certainly won’t make it easy for them especially with Romelu Lukaku in the side but Everton have been time and again let down by their Defence this season and City will be looking to exploit that with all the talent at their disposal.

I think City will snatch this but I would expect both teams to score and the tie still very much alive for the return leg in 3 weeks time. An away win for me
