European World Cup Qualifiers Goals – Group B

Group B is going to go down to the wire after both Switzerland and Portugal picked up all important wins last night. These two nations will face off on Tuesday night with the traveling Swiss side knowing that they require just a draw to reach the World Cup Finals.

For Portugal it will be win or bust as they currently find themselves three points further back in second. They do however have a very hefty goal difference and should they pick up the necessary win on Tuesday then it will be they who will sit top of Group B.

Last night Portugal made the short trip to Andorra and earned a 2-0 win, a goal less first half would have created some tension in the Portuguese camp as a draw would have seen them consigned to second in the group and having to make do with a potential playoff spot.

But who else than their talisman Cristiano Ronaldo would be the man to break the deadlock. He would be on hand to score his 79th international goal to give Portugal their much needed lead and soon after Andre Silva of A.C. Milan would make it 2-0 and wrap up victory.

However Switzerland earned an impressive 5-2 win at home to Hungary and although that quintet of goals will do little in terms of goal difference between them and Portugal it does put them in the box seat in terms of qualification to Russia.

Switzerland raced into a 4-0 lead with the game done and dusted by half time, Hungary would make the scoreline a bit more respectable but the Swiss were rarely troubled and qualification is now very much in their hands.
Imagine a World Cup Finals without Portugal and Argentina and by extension Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. It is a prospect that FIFA dare not dream of.

Here are the goals from the two matches last night

Andorra vs Portugal

Switzerland vs Hungary

The Faroe Islands and Latvia played out a 0-0 draw in Torshavn.
