A total of 100 teams began their UEFA Europa League adventure yesterday as the First Qualifying Round took place all over Europe. It was a very mixed bag of results for clubs in Britain and Ireland with representation from clubs in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic.
Although Glasgow Rangers won thanks to a Kenny Miller strike they will probably asking themselves how they have not got more of an advantage going into the return leg with Luxembourg’s Progres Niedercorn. A tie which is still very much in the balance.
St Johnstone went behind twice and ultimately ended up losing 2-1 to Lithuanian side FK Trakai, while Bala Town of Wales suffered the same fate as they lost to Liechtenstein’s biggest club FC Vaduz (the country does not have a league system and only the cup winners are represented in Europe)
Connah’s Quay Nomads of the Welsh Premier League take a slender advantage into their second leg tie with an impressive 1-0 win over HJK Helsinki while there were very mixed fortunes for clubs on both sides of the Irish border. While Bangor City lost to Denmark’s Lyngby 1-0
There were heavy defeats for both Coleraine of the Northern Irish Premiership and Derry City of the League Of Ireland. Coleraine were thumped 7-0 by Haugesund of Norway while Derry suffered a 6-1 loss at the hands of Midtjylland.
Ballymena United were dealt a 3-0 loss at the hands of Norwegian opposition once again, this time Odd Grenland being the victors, while LOI outfit Shamrock Rovers picked up a crucial win in Iceland as they beat Stjarnan by just a single goal and Cork City beat Estonia’s Levadia Tallinn 2-0 away from home
