England Under 20’s Show Seniors How It Is Done

The England mens national team may get it fair share of criticism, namely when it once again fails at a major tournament but the same cannot be said about the Under 20’s as they have now progressed to the Semi Finals of the World Cup at that age group.

Earlier on today they went head to head with Mexico with a place against Italy in the next round at stake and the game was certainly not without incident. Tottenham Hotspur youngster Josh Onomah was sent off for a second bookable offence in what quite frankly was a ludicrous decision from the referee.

Onomah surged forward from a deep lying midfielder position and as moved past his Mexican counterpart he inadvertently stamped him. It was an action that had no malice in it whatsoever and was just an unfortunate landing of the boot.

The Tottenham midfielder was not looking at the Mexican player caught in the crossfire and was somewhat shocked by the referee’s decision to show him his second yellow card of the game, that came with 16 minutes to go and the young Lions already ahead thanks to new Liverpool signing Dominic Solanke

The former Chelsea player who has moved to Anfield for £3.5m scored the games only goal in the second half, a neat slide rule pass found Solanke in acres of space. The youngster was certainly not going to turn down an opportunity like that and he then duly obliged to put England ahead.

With Paul Simpson’s side in front they then had to withstand what Mexico were to throw at them in pursuit of an equaliser, this young England side were certainly tested and had to dig in for the last 15 minutes or so once Onomah was given his marching orders.

Hold was exactly what they did as Mexico threw everything at them but ultimately it was to no avail as England saw out the job in hand. It may have been a young side but it was an incredibly mature performance. Italy now awaits on Thursday.

Here are all the highlights from England’s historic victory
