CONCACAF Gold Cup Weekend Action

In a summer of few international tournaments one thing you can seemingly rely on is the fact that there will be a CONCACAF Gold Cup to look forward to. Of all the different regional tournaments bar the OFC Nations Cup this is arguably the weakest one.

That said though we shouldn’t do the competition too much of a disservice as there will still be regional supremacy up for grabs as the likes of the United States, Mexico and Canada will be looking to lift the title when the final takes place on July 26.

The competition has already started in anger with action in group A and B in the history books while the remaining opening matches in group c take place later tonight (UK time)

In group A – Canada have got off to the perfect start with a 4-2 win over French Guiana, a scoreline that perhaps suggests the game was closer than it actually was. The Canadians raced into a 3-0 lead before letting their opponents back into the game with two quick fire goals. Thankfully though a second strike from Alphonso Davies would go on to secure all three points

While in the other group A opener Costa Rica edged out Honduras by just the solitary goal. That strike came from Marco Urena on 38 minutes and that would be enough to put the Costa Rican’s second in the group on goal difference at this early stage

In group b it was not the ideal start for hosts the United States as they were held to a draw with Panama. The fixture in Nashville saw a goalless first half but the game finally sparked into life when Dom Dwyer broke the deadlock five minutes after the restart.

But just ten minutes later, Panama would draw level thanks to Miguel Carmargo. That would be the end of the goalscoring for the day and the USNMT will surely have to look at that as two points dropped

While in the other fixture in this group saw something as a surprise as Martinique got the better of Nicaragua by two goals to nil
