Chelsea Leave It Too Late To Land Lukaku

We are in official transfer saga status now aren’t we – no less than 12 hours ago (at the time of writing) Chelsea looked ready to hijack any potential move for Everton’s Romelu Lukaku with a £75m bid of their own, at that point the Cold War between the two clubs vying for his services had very much heated up.

At that point it raised question as to where exactly Lukaku would end up calling his new home for next season as a case could be made for move to either Manchester or West London well with the latest developments you can pretty much remove any shred of doubt.

That is because he is set for a medical at Old Trafford after Manchester United had their bid of £75m accepted, once again it is advantage Red Devils and it could very well be checkmate. After a dramatic period of back and forth it does now look as if Jose Mourinho has got one over his former employers.

This will be much to the chagrin of Chelsea boss Antonio Conte who is growing increasingly frustrated with his lack of transfer activity at Stamford Bridge, some reports were saying that he is considering quitting the club for this very reason.

I don’t think that the failure to land Lukaku will result in the former Juventus manager departing the club but this will be news that would have not gone down very well for the Italian. While conversely Jose Mourinho will be delighted in finally capturing a marquee signing.

Is it the name that they coveted from the start? perhaps not, but after a whole host of player rebuffs and transfer dead end this will be a weight off of Mourinho’s shoulders as he can now look to try to add more players to the squad that won the Europa League last season.

The key in United getting the edge over Chelsea this time around is the fact that they are prepared to pay the necessary agent fees to ‘super agent’ Mario Ranola, something that the Premier League champions were not prepared to do.

With the links that United and Ranola already have after the signings of both Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic last summer then this will come as no real surprise and it means that the Italian wheeler dealer will have his pockets lined with another hefty sum.

The deal eventually could raise to as high as £90m due to their being a number of add on clauses totaling a value of £90m, United will get their man but it will come at a price. This does also mean that any move for Alvaro Morata is dead in the water while any deal for Wayne Rooney to move to Everton is treated seperately.

So in the opening salvo for next season, Manchester United have taken an early lead and when you consider that a team managed by Jose Mourinho usually is better in it’s second season (last Chelsea stint not included) then it is a very ominous not for Chelsea but for the rest of the Premier League also.
