Champions League First Qualifying Round Recap

The five ties that comprised the First Qualifying Round of the Champions League were concluded on Tuesday and we now know which quintet of teams have moved onto next week’s second phase of the competition where they will join the other 29 teams already placed in the draw.

One of those five will be Linfield of Northern Ireland who have been rewarded with a tie against Brendan Rodgers’ Glasgow Celtic. David Healy’s side took a slender 1-0 to San Marino on Tuesday night and David Healy’s men ground out a stalemate against La Florita to go head to head with the Scottish champions.

It may not have been pretty from Linfield and they will perhaps be disappointed that they did not pick up a win but ultimately they did what they had to do and that misery will soon be quelled with the fact that they will be going head to head with Celtic next Friday.

The game was scheduled for either Tuesday or Wednesday but it has been moved to Friday so as to not create any potential crowd issues, also to help alleviate the issue the Scottish treble winners have said that they will want be bringing any fans with them.

What with it being 0-0 there’s no point putting up any goal clips but let’s now take a look at the other four matches that took place on Tuesday night.

The New Saints overturned their first leg deficit against FC Europa of Gibraltar with a 3-1 win on Tuesday, one that required extra time and also saw the home side eventually reduced to nine men. The Welsh side took advantage of their numerical supremacy on the pitch and have booked a place in the next round

There was no way back for FCI Tallinn of Estonia after their 1st leg defeat to Hibernians of Malta as they lost 1-0 at home to the Maltese champions

FC Santa Coloma of Andorra had a 1-0 deficit in their tie against Alashkert of Armenia and unfortunately for them a 1-1 draw at home was not good enough to progress further

While the road for Trepca 89 of Kosovo came to an abrput end after they lost 4-1 to Vikingur Gota of the Faroe Islands at home and bowed out 6-2 on aggregate.
