Carver goes flat at Newcastle

Newcastle United yesterday announced the sacking of Caretaker Manager John Carver. The 50 year old was let go by the club along with his assistant Steve Stone, with their now being a vacancy for the managers job on Tyneside it seems only a matter of time before ex Derby County Manager Steve McClaren is announced as the new number 1.

It was believed last week that John Carver was to be retained by the club to work as assistant to Steve McClaren, but after Carver only secured a miserly 3 wins out of the 20 matches in charge (win ratio just 15%) it was felt best that a clean break was needed, also in doing this it will allow the next incumbent to bring in their own backroom staff.

McClaren, 54, was sacked by Derby County last month after failing to take them to the Championship play-offs. He was twice approached by Newcastle towards the end of the season but preferred to stay at Derby but as Derby’s form fell off a cliff in the tail end of the season it seemed as if this decision backfired.

At the third time of asking it seems as if Newcastle will finally get their man, will the Newcastle fans be able to put McClaren’s Middlesbrough connections to one side or are they just glad that they don’t have to sip on flat Carver anymore, only time will tell.
