Burnley vs Manchester United a few quick thoughts

  • A big win for Manchester United yesterday as they ended the day taking full advantage of Liverpool’s slip up at home to Crystal Palace
  • Jose Mourinho’s men are now 23 games unbeaten in the league but they only manage to stay relatively still as they still find themselves outside of the top four
  • But the gap is getting ever smaller and it is one that they could finally close with a win in Thursday’s Manchester Derby
  • Not only that but now have two games in hand over their arch rivals on Merseyside with just a three point gap left to erode
  • That is the case after a relatively routine win at Turf Moor yesterday afternoon
  • They did what many teams have failed to do this season and that is pick up all three points in what has become something of a fortress during this campaign
  • It was the first game that United have played since Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s injury and with it being diagnosed as a damaged cruciate ligament you do have to wonder if that is the last he has played at Old Trafford
  • Marcus Rashford was rested much to the chagrin of FPL managers across the country
  • But the logic there is that he is being rested for Thursday’s all important trip to The Etihad
  • And the gamble paid off as the stand in cast of Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney scored a goal a piece to ensure all three points for Mourinho’s men
  • Martial opened the scoring on 21 minutes and by the time Rooney had scored his first since January just before the break then it was pretty much a job well done
  • With the game all but wrapped up before the break the game was pretty pedestrian after the restart as Burnley failed to get a foothold in the game
  • And Sean Dyche’s men are just going to have to look over their shoulders as the gap to themselves in Swansea in 18th has been cut to 5 points at the end of the weekend
  • On 36 points they are not safe yet and could they very well be sucked into a relegation battle
  • Their home form is good but it’s their away form which is letting them down this season and although they looked more than safe a few weeks ago, it’s quite the same case at present
  • You get the feeling that they are definitely going to have to pick up one more win between now and the end of the season to make sure of Premier League survival
