Burnley vs Crystal Palace a few quick thoughts

  • It is looking bleak for Frank De Boer
  • Four games, four defeats and not a single goal to Crystal Palace’s name this season
  • If Frank De Boer does get sacked after four matches, then surely we have to be asking ourselves ‘what is the point?’
  • De Boer is trying to implement a change in style – but has not been backed with personnel in the summer
  • If that is the case then when has Steve Parish not supported him in the transfer window that has just passed
  • Palace set up in a more pragmatic style in this afternoon’s clash with Burnley as they looked to at least get something positive on the board
  • At the end of the day you can talk about personnel, tactics and systems but you simply cannot legislate for Lee Chung-Yong and that horror show pass
  • Just three minutes into the game and the South Korean laid the ball on a plate for Burnley’s Chris Wood
  • The New Zealand international had opened his account for Tottenham before the international break but he probably will never be presented with an easier opportunity then the one he was gifted today
  • All the preparation that Palace would have made would have gone out on window early on
  • When things go against you they really seem to go against you
  • Considering Burnley had two efforts on goal throughout the whole game, it really was not their day
  • That could not be more apparent for defender Scott Dann, he had already seen two chances cleared off the line but the fact he did not get on the scoresheet is quite simply his own fault
  • With just 90 seconds of the game remaining he simply had to put his header anywhere on target to give Palace a deserved share of the points but he somehow headed wide with the goal at his mercy
  • Manager Frank De Boer’s face simply summed it up especially when he offered a headed motion from the bench
  • The performance of the Eagles was their worst of the season and that may be cause for some optimism
  • But to be honest there is very little positive to reflect on for the South London outfit in these opening four games of the season
  • They are also the first side in 93 years to lose the first four matches of a top-flight season without scoring a goal
  • For Burnley there will be delight at their second win of the season, a very respectable tally of 7 points from a possible 12 will have gone a long way to silencing critics who tipped them to struggle
  • That said there is still a lot of work to do and they may well be without Tom Heaton as he had to be subbed off in the first half after picking up an arm injury
  • That is the only blot on the copybook for the Clarets as they move up to 7th in the table
  • While Palace move to second bottom by virtue of goal difference, should West Ham pick up anything against Huddersfield they will end the gameweek at the foot of the table.
