Brighton vs Newcastle – Premier League Match Preview

Just the one game this afternoon in the Premier League and pits together two of the sides that were promoted from the EFL Championship at the end of last season and as Brighton and Hove Albion play host to Newcastle United at The AMEX Stadium.

It would be Rafa Benitez’s men who would eventually pip the Seagulls to the title on the final day of the season and Chris Hughton would be keen to exact an element of revenge after missing out on picking up the silverware from England’s second tier.

Not only but it also present the opportunity to get one over his former employers as the ex Republic of Ireland international was in full charge of the Magpies between June 2009 and December 2010, a spell which see him mastermind another Championship winning campaign.

But today the focus will be on aiming to pick up a second straight home win after finally getting off the mark against West Brom a fortnight ago. That 3-1 win over Tony Pulis’ men also saw then score their first goals of the season as Pascal Gross earned the accolade of scoring Brighton’s first ever Premier League goal.

The Seagulls will however have to bounce back from defeat last weekend as they were on the losing side of a 2-1 scoreline when they faced Bournemouth in the South Coast derby. They had taken the lead but the game was then turned on its head with the introduction of Jordon Ibe to the game.

Ibe who previously plied his trade at Liverpool came on as a substitute and played a part in both of Bournemouth’s goal as Eddie Howe’s men came from behind to earn their first win of the season and ease the pressure on players and manager alike.

It was a 2-1 scoreline that Newcastle were involved last weekend but they were on the winning end as they got the better of Stoke in front of their own fans. Jamaal Lascelles was on hand to score the decisive goal for the second week in a row to make sure his team earned all three points.

That meant it is now three wins on the spin for Rafa Benitez’s men and they will look to make it four in a row beside the sea this afternoon. A win would move them back up to fourth in the table and see them leapfrog the likes of Tottenham, Liverpool and Watford.

Brighton’s home form is going to be imperative if they are to stay up this season and these are the kind of games they will need to take maximum points from if they are to have any chance of survival come next May. That said I can see this one being a scenario where both teams cancel each other out and it ends up in a draw.
