Bournemouth vs Liverpool – Premier League Match Preview

The second of the two Premier League outings this afternoon takes us to the Vitality Stadium as Bournemouth play host to Liverpool with both sides looking to point midweek disappointment behind them after they each failed to win on Wednesday.

Bournemouth’s task was the more harder as they had to travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United and although they offered a gallant performance, they were still eventually beaten by a strike from Belgian international Romelu Lukaku.

Defeat there meant that Eddie Howe’s men have now not won in their last five outings, picking up three points from  a possible 15. That combined with yesterday’s results means that they currently find themselves 16th in the table while scoring 16 points this season.

They are just keeping their heads above water at the moment but they need to be careful that they do not find themselves on a longer run without a win as the likes of West Brom and Newcastle will attest to, it is no coincidence that their form has seen them drop into the bottom three.

If Bournemouth do win today then the complexion looks a lot rosier as they would then move up to 12th in the table, so three points would give them even further daylight between them and the drop zone as we head into the busy Christmas period.

The Cherries are not giving all that much away in defence, conceding just 20 goals this season but at the same time they have only scored 15 goals in this Premier League campaign, this makes them the joint third lowest goalscorers in the division at present.

They go up against a Liverpool side who have only managed to draw their last two matches and have subsequently given up their current top four position, that said a win today would see them leapfrog Arsenal once again as they would be able to benefit from Tottenham’s heavy defeat at Manchester City last weekend.

The pressure has been added to Jurgen Klopp after successive home draws, he would have come in for criticism last Sunday after making wholesale changes in the Merseyside derby, while he himself would have had criticism for Craig Pawson after his decision to award a penalty for Everton.

That came as a result of Dejan Lovren being adjudged to have pushed Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the box with Wayne Rooney subsequently slotting home from the spot. Whether you feel it was a Penalty or not can still be argued but the fact that wholesale changes were made by the former Borussia Dortmund boss will no doubt be questioned.

Prior to that result, Liverpool had scored 12 goals in their last two matches across all competitions and if ever the adage if it isn’t broke then don’t fix it was at its most prevalent then it could not have rung any truer just seven days ago.

Klopp learned his lesson on Wednesday but unfortunately they came up against the stubborn resistance of Alan Pardew’s West Brom. It may not have been a win for the Baggies who are still looking for their first one since August but it was a point that undoubtedly suited them more.

Last time Liverpool were on the road, they also visited the South Coast as it was Brighton who got the full force of the Reds’ attacking ability with the Merseysiders turning in a five star performance at The Amex and Jurgen Klopp will be hoping we see more of the same later again.

And after two frustrating home results, they will be looking to cast the shackles off against a Bournemouth side who are struggling to find form. I think Liverpool will click today and get some revenge for that dramatic 4-3 defeat here last season, an away win for me.
