BBC Gossip Column Debunked – Issue 65

This column has now reached retirement age as today marks its 65th issue, thankfully though it is showing no signs of winding down anytime soon (well not before the end of the month anyway) so with that in mind here is today’s big bundle of gossip

Gossip in standard font, my thoughts are in bold

Tottenham are not expected to entertain offers from Chelsea for full-back Danny Rose, 27, with the Blues ready to double his salary. (Evening Standard) I think it would be Manchester United or bust for Danny Rose

Manchester United are no longer interested in signing Rose, although the England international is desperate for a move to Old Trafford. (Daily Star) So it looks like it’s bust then, honestly I would be very surprised if Rose did leave the club this month.

Spurs have been outbid by Lyon for Celta Vigo midfielder Pape Cheikh Diop, 20. The Premier League side offered £9m for the Senegal-born Spanish youth international (Daily Mail) No real cause for concern as I would imagine this was something of a smokescreen for the Ross Barkley move, one that now Gylfi Sigurdsson has finally moved to Everton will begin to pick up pace.

Chelsea have not given up on signing Alex Sandro, 26, from Juventus, but are relying on the Brazilian left-back handing in a transfer request. (Evening Standard) Mentioned this yesterday, I cannot personally envisage the Brazilian handing in a transfer request

The Blues have made a new £73m bid for Sandro, but Juventus have rejected the offer. (Calciomercato, via Daily Star) While Juventus are seemingly standing their ground here

Antonio Conte’s side are to offer £25m plus add-ons for Leicester midfielder Danny Drinkwater, 27, but the Foxes want £40m for the player. (Daily Mail) £40m for Danny Drinkwater?! – No chance, Chelsea may as well look elsewhere for that kind of money

Barcelona have offered Liverpool £118m for 25-year-old Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho. (Goal.com, in Spanish) Is this the amount which is going to be enough to prize Coutinho away from Anfield

Barcelona are a step closer to securing a deal for Ousmane Dembele, 20, from Borussia Dortmund after the French forward was pictured packing his bags. (Daily Express) This deal looks the more likely to be completed but the Catalan giants will be confident of landing both players

Manchester City have made a £60m bid for Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez, with Real Madrid also interested in the 28-year-old Chilean. (Don Balon, via Daily Star) Arsene Wenger has said that the player is not going to be sold, would £60m change his opinion though

Arsenal have already rejected a £45m bid from City for Sanchez, according to the player’s agent Fernando Felicevich. (El Mercurio, via Daily Express) Well if £45m is not enough then it is going to be have to be at least higher than that to prize the Chilean away.

Wenger has admitted Sanchez and Oxlade-Chamberlain could both be sold this summer. (Daily Star) Maybe a chink in the armour of Arsene Wenger after these comments

Championship side Aston Villa, who are in the relegation zone, are interested in signing Gunners midfielder Jack Wilshere, 25. (Daily Mail) He was being linked with Juventus earlier in the week, this one sounds much more likely.

Everton Ronald Koeman says the club still has business to do before the transfer window closes, despite breaking their transfer record to sign £45m Gylfi Sigurdsson from Swansea. (Guardian) A striker to complete the set perhaps?

Manchester United are ready to offer striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, 35, a coaching role as part of their move to re-sign him. (Independent) Will Ibrahimovic be interested in coaching though, I think he’d be a difficult coach to work under but that’s just my opinion.

Napoli have turned down a £55m bid from Barcelona for Italy’s 26-year-old forward Lorenzo Insigne. (Gazzetta dello Sport, via IB Times) Barcelona will not need him if they land the two targets above.

Tottenham are lining up a £27m bid for Barcelona midfielder Denis Suarez. The 23-year-old Spaniard looked to be heading to Italian side Napoli. (Mundo Deportivo, via Metro) That could be a useful addition for Tottenham actually, whether there is much truth in the rumour though I’m not too sure.

Chelsea pulled out of a deal for Paris St-Germain’s Polish midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak, 27, because PSG were too busy handling the arrival of Neymar from Barcelona. (L’Equipe, via Daily Express) If they are having to spend £40m to try and land Danny Drinkwater, they would have more sense to go in for the Polish international.

Juventus have agreed a £18.2m fee for PSG midfielder Blaise Matuidi, 30. The Frenchman will become the Serie A club’s 10th summer signing. (Guardian) A good signing for Juventus as they look to ward off A.C. Milan this season.

Brazilian defender Gabriel is set to join Valencia from Arsenal in a £10m deal. Gabriel, 26, joined the Gunners for £15m in January 2015. (Daily Mirror) Arsenal need additional centrebacks arguably before this departure, surely Wenger will bring in at least one before the end of the month.

Watford are close to agreeing a season-long loan deal for Benfica’s Peruvian 26-year-old winger Andre Carrillo. (Daily Mirror) Another potential signing for the United Nations

Leeds’ New Zealand striker Chris Wood, 25, fears his club’s demand of a £20m fee could stop a dream move to Burnley. (Daily Star) Does any dream of a move to Burnley?

Sheffield Wednesday will reject a second bid from Leicester City for forward George Hirst. The 18-year-old is the son of former England striker David Hirst. (Sheffield Star) I remember watching his dad play when I was a kid, a sign that I’ve been watching football for too long.

West Brom have no intention of selling Nacer Chadli, but are lining up a replacement in case Swansea make an offer too good to refuse for the 28-year-old Belgian winger. (Birmingham Mail) Fail to prepare, prepare to fail and all that.
