BBC Gossip Column Debunked – Issue 47

After no transfer gossip yesterday – (apologies about that) it’s time for another serving of gossip debunking, you can squeeze this one just before you have your dinner.

Gossip in standard font, my thoughts are in bold

Barcelona forward Neymar sent Whatsapp messages to Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho, 25, in a bid to persuade his fellow Brazilian to join him in a move to Paris St-Germain. (Sport.es) Let’s not get ahead of ourselves here, Neymar has not even signed for PSG just yet but again that’s not good news for Liverpool fans

Midfielder Nemanja Matic, 28, has completed a medical as he looks set to complete a £40m move from Chelsea to Manchester United. (Manchester Evening News) This a DONE DEAL!!

Watford manager Marco Silva has stressed the need for more signings before his side’s opening fixture of the new season. (Hertfordshire Mercury) It’s not been a great window for Watford has it, a new manager will want to bring his own players and that is not something that has been forthcoming at Vicarage Road just yet

The Hornets have stepped up their chase for 27-year-old Arsenal full-back Kieran Gibbs, after West Brom withdrew their interest in the England defender. (Watford Observer) Quite simply they need to offer £20m for starters and then get Gibbs to lower his wage demands. Nowhere near a deal being completed at the moment

American businessman Michael Eisner will complete his purchase of Portsmouth before the start of the EFL season. (Sky Sports) Something about a “Mickey Mouse” club I guess?

Tottenham are “a little bit behind” other clubs in making signings this summer but are “working hard” to bring players in, says manager Mauricio Pochettino. (Evening Standard) If this was the same situation six weeks ago then there would be no panic, now with just two weeks to go then everyone connected to the club is starting to get a little twitchy and rightly so
