Bayern Munich vs Benfica – Match Preview

It’s the Bundesliga leaders playing hosts to the Portuguese League’s top side Tonight in the first leg of this Champions League Quarter Finals. Bayern will go into Tonight’s clash as favourites but Benfica certainly can’t be underestimated

Bayern find themselves 5 points clear at the top as they inch closer to another Bundesliga title to add to their collection. They warmed up at the weekend with a slim 1-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt. It might not have been the relentless Bayern we are used to seeing but it was a good enough performance to get them over the line.

They are only at this phase of the competition thanks to a dramatic fightback from 2-0 down in their Round of 16 tie with Juventus. Thomas Muller’s injury time header took the game into Extra Time and from there Bayern went on to win the game 4-2 and 6-4 on aggregate.

Were Bayern lucky that night? perhaps but certainly started slow out of the blocks that night and Benfica will aim to have a similar lightning start that Juventus had if they are to have any chance of coming way with some sort of result from The Allianz Arena.

Benfica offered up a 5 star performance at the weekend in preparation for this tie as they steamrollered past Braga 5-1 to make sure their slender 2 point lead over cross city rivals Sporting in check. In the last round they edged past Russian side Zenit in what was a very edgy encounter,

Nicolas Gaitan will be the man that Bayern have to keep quiet. If he can be allowed the time to pull the strings then he could cause Bayern some problems. While Fulham fans will notice Konstantinos Mitroglou who after that £11m flop has been loaned out to the Portuguese side.

The smart money would obviously go on Bayern Tonight the question will be whether Benfica can do enough to make sure that they stay in the tie. A home win for me.
