Austria vs Hungary – Match Preview

It’s not quite the battle of the Austro-Hungarian Empire but when these two sides were paired together in the draw for the group stages then this game would have certainly raised some eyebrows and created a wave of interest in both Vienna and Budapest

The key man for Austria will be David Alaba who will look to replicate the form he has had for Bayern Munich over the past few seasons. His pace down the left hand side will be a constant threat to Hungary while at the back Tottenham’s Kevin Wimmer will aim to provide the defensive platform to allow Alaba to advance

Wimmer signed by Tottenham last Summer looked an impressive deputy when he had to fill in for the injured Jan Vertonghen . Many felt that injury to Vertonghen could have seriously derailed Tottenham’s title tilt but Wimmer’s appearances for Spurs during that period where incredibly solid and he won high praise from fans and pundits alike

In attack they may not be blessed a wave of options but they do have Marc Janko, the 32 year old has been terrorising defences across Europe for over a decade now and  he will look to add to the 26 goals he has already scored for Austria. That goal tally has come from only 51 games so a strike rate of just under 1 in 2, if the goals are going to come from anywhere you would imagine it would be from Janko

As for Hungary keep an eye out for Gabor Kiraly in his tracksuit trousers in goal while English football fans will recognise Zoltan Gera of ex West Brom and Fulham and Tamas Priskin who seemed at one point to be undertaking his own tour of The Championship

Their warm up for the tournament wasn’t ideal as they drew with the Ivory Coast and then lost to World Champions Germany. Since qualifying for the tournament they have failed to win any of the three friendlies that they played in

I’m sorry Hungary fans that’s about all I know on your nation. That and the great team of the 1950’s, it’s not quite Puskas and Hidegkuti but at least they are here and you never know with the group they are in they could just squeeze in as one of the 4 best ranked 3rd place teams.
