Australia Confederations Cup Squad

Australia are getting set for the fourth appearance at a FIFA Confederations Cup this summer and with that in mind manager Ange Postecoglou has named his 23 man panel for the tournament. The Socceroos are competing in Russia by virtue of winning the Asian Cup on home soil back in 2015.

That was their first continental success since moving from the Oceania to the AFC confederation back in January 2006. This tournament is not only going to be used to add to the success of two years ago but to also further prepare for their qualification bid to the FIFA World Cup in 12 months time.

This squad does not perhaps have the abundance of talent that the golden generation of Kewell, Viduka et al showed a decade or so but there are still some well known faces that have been selected and of course heading up that list will be the former Everton player Tim Cahill who now resides at Melbourne City in the A-League

Domestic interest comes in the form of defenders Brad Smith of Bournemouth and Bailey Wright of Bristol City while there are a quartet of British based midfielders in the squad they are Aston Villa’s Mile Jedinak, Massimo Luongo of Queens Park Rangers, Aaron Mooy who spent a season loan at newly promoted Huddersfield and Tom Rogic of Scottish powerhouses Celtic.

Here is the Australia squad in full:

Goalkeepers: Mitchell Langerak (Stuttgart/Germany), Mathew Ryan (Genk/Belgium), Daniel Vukovic (Sydney FC)

Defenders: Aziz Behich (Bursaspor/Turkey), Milos Degenek (Yokohama F Marinos/Japan), Dylan McGowan (Pacos de Ferreira/Portugal), Ryan McGowan (Guizhou Zhicheng/China PR), Trent Sainsbury (Inter Milan/Italy), Brad Smith (Bournemouth/England), Bailey Wright (Bristol City/England)

Midfielders: Ajdin Hrustic (Groningen/Netherlands), Jackson Irvine (Burton Albion/England), Mile Jedinak (Aston Villa/England), Massimo Luongo (Queens Park Rangers/England), Mark Milligan (Bani Yas/United Arab Emirates), Aaron Mooy (Huddersfield Town/England), Tom Rogic (Celtic/Scotland)

Forwards: Tim Cahill (Melbourne City), Tomi Juric (Luzern/Switzerland), Robbie Kruse (uncontracted), Mathew Leckie (Hertha Berlin/Germany), Jamie McLaren (Darmstadt/Germany), James Troisi (Melbourne Victory)
