11 Things we have learned about Football this week…

1. Chelsea move another stop closer to winning the Premier League title, bar a smart build up for the goal by Eden Hazard it wasn’t necessarily pretty and by no means a classic but it was kind of performance that Mourinho does best, which means they only need 2 more victories to secure the trophy. Manchester United can’t have too many complaints from that game especially as Mike Riley got the decisions spot on in the build up to the goal and the Ander Herrera penalty claim

2. Aston Villa march onto Wembley, quite the turnaround since Tim Sherwood took over and he seems to have the players firing on all cylinders especially a rejuvinated Christian Benteke. Although you do have to ask yourself how much of this is down to the new Manager effect or how much they just didn’t really care for Paul Lambert

3. There will be no honeymoon ending for Steven Gerrard as Liverpool fall short at the Semi Final stage and the hopes of a birthday Cup Winners Medal for Gerrard are dashed as Brendan Rodgers becomes the first Liverpool Manager since the 1950’s to not win a trophy in the first three seasons. Another season of Europa League football awaits

4. Arsenal didn’t completely make easy work of getting past Reading to secure their place to the Final. A moment of quality from Alexis Sanchez led to their opener, an absolute howler from the Royals Goalkeeper Adam Federici to gift them Arsenal’s winner is certainly one he will want to forget in a hurry.

5. Leicester get their third win a row to move off the bottom of the Premier League, it seems as the momentum is very much with them and with a favourable last 6 games of the season there must be hope for Nigel Pearson that he can pull off the great escape not just for the players on the pitch but for the man who was nearly sacked at the start of the year

6. Burnley must be getting concerned now, for all the positivity that Sean Dyche portrays out of the Turf Moor camp, now is not the time to go back to the bottom of the table and to not score a goal in 6 and a half hours. With Ashley Barnes missing from the next game and Danny Ings stuck on 9 goals since February these are worrying times for Burnley

7. The malaise on Tyneside contiues for Newcastle. Still not really safe from relegation, they have now lost 6 in a row, John Carver said after the defeat to Sunderland that his stint as Newcastle manager would be defined by that result if they aren’t careful his stint could be ultimately be defined by relegation

8. The race for the Championship takes another turn as Watford go to the summit this weekend after Bournemouth slipped up at home to Sheffield Wednesday and could only manage a 2-2 draw. With the margins being so slim, how costly will that prove in a fortnights time?

9. The gap stays at 2 points in Spain between Barcelona and Real Madrid in a weekend where Lionel Messi scored his 400th career goal. An astonishing feat and I wouldn’t be too surprised if he ends up getting his 500th at Barcelona as well in a few years from now.

10. Borussia Dortmund put paid to any doubters who thought that they wouldn’t perform after the news that Jurgen Klopp will leave the club at the end of the season. As to where Klopp will go next, that will surely be one of the main plots of the Summer – will there be a sabbatical or will a stint at the Etihad await?

11. And congratulations to PSV as they secured the Dutch League title on Saturday but now the obvious fire sale will take place with a whole host suitors looking to sign Memphis Depay. Although don’t expect him to be the only one to depart from Eindhoven this Summer
