Mexico came through the challenge of Venezuela last night unscathed after drawing 1-1 in their final Copa America Centenario group game. The UFWC holders had already qualified for the quarter finals and now looked to secure top spot in a group which has already seen former holders Uruguay dumped out of the competition
Venezuela had opened the lead after just 10 minutes when Jose Manuel Velazquez put them ahead and they were just 10 minutes away from snatching the title before Jesus Corona grabbed an 80th minute equaliser to make sure the title stayed with Mexico.
The Mexicans will face the runners up of Group D which will be either Argentina or Chile, while Venezuela will face the Group D winners
Mexico will now have to run the gauntlet of three title matches if they are to win both the Copa America and retain the UFWC, with no Brazil or Uruguay in the tournament they could very much do so. They will have to hope they don’t bump into regular title holders Argentina though, what price they get a 4th reign in modern history before the tournament is over
