Serie A Review Week 31

Filippo is on a brief hiatus this week so I’m going to step in and do the Serie A review this time around

Juventus extended their lead at the top of Serie A to 6 points after winning at home to Empoli on Saturday. A Mario Mandzukic strike just before half time was enough to give the defending champions a slender victory and it seems as if The Old Lady has no signs of stopping yet. The Turin side look now odds on favourites to clinch a 5th successive Italian Championship

That victory put the pressure on Napoli who played 24 hours later, unfortunately they missed their opportunity to cut the gap back down to 3 points with defeat away to Udinese. It what was a miserable day for the nearest challengers it was made worse by the fact their goalscorer Gonzalo Higuain was sent off for two bookable offences.

In the race for the final Champions League position Roma strolled past Lazio in the Rome Derby, played in front of a half empty Stadio Olimpico Roma won 4-1. That win coupled with Fiorentina dropping points at home to Sampdoria meant that Rome now have a 3 point advantage for the race for third.

It wasn’t a good Sunday for either Milan club with them both losing 2-1. Inter were bested by Torino while A.C. lost in Bergamo to Atalanta. They stay 5th and 6th respectively and do their chances of getting a Champions League spot no help at all.

At the bottom Verona got a vital win but they still find themselves 6 points from safety while three clubs above them Carpi, Palermo and Frosinone all failed to pick up any points. Just a solitary point is between that trio of clubs with two of those three set to go down at the end of the season

That concludes this weeks round up – apologies it’s not as in depth but Filippo will be back to pick up the reigns next week.
